A great T20 partnership must attack from the first ball. Both batters must make the bowling look worse than it is. And when it works — when two extraordinary players are batting together and feeding off each other’s confidence — the result is something that can make a stadium of 60,000 people unable to breathe. The IPL has produced three partnerships so completely dominant that opposing teams simply had no plan for them. Here they are.
Kohli and ABD — The Most Beautiful Batting Partnership in IPL History
From 2011 to 2018, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers batted together for RCB in what became the most celebrated partnership in IPL history. They were perfect opposites. Kohli drove through the covers with punishing precision and ran every possible run. De Villiers improvised to all 360 degrees of the ground, playing shots that commentators had no name for — ramps over the keeper off good-length balls, inside-out drives over the covers off spin, scoops from outside off-stump over fine leg. Together they created a specific problem that no bowling attack solved: plugging the gap for one of them opened up the entire ground for the other. In 2016, Kohli scored 973 runs and de Villiers scored 687. They batted together in more than 60 partnerships across their years together. They never won the IPL. They were still, by a distance, the best batting combination the competition had ever seen.
Gayle and Kohli — The Most Frightening Powerplay in IPL History
When Chris Gayle opened with Virat Kohli for RCB in the 2013 season, opposition captains faced a genuinely unanswerable problem in the powerplay. Gayle could score 70 to 80 runs in the first 6 overs at a strike rate of 200+. Kohli could score 40 in those same overs at 160+. Combined, their powerplay partnership regularly put 100 runs on the board before the 10th over had been bowled. When Gayle hit his 175* in 2013, he walked off after being dismissed and found Kohli at the crease with RCB needing barely anything to win. The match was already over. In that 2013 season, RCB scored 263 in a single innings — the highest team total in IPL history at the time. Gayle made 175 of them. Kohli finished the rest. The bowling side simply did not have a plan.
Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma — The Partnership That Rewrote Scoring Records
When Sunrisers Hyderabad decided in 2024 to open with Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma together, they created the most explosive first-over partnership in IPL history. Both batters operate on the same principle: attack from ball one, every ball, without exception. In the match where SRH scored 287 against RCB in 2024 — the highest team total in IPL history — Head made 89 off 49 balls and Abhishek made 63 off 23 balls. Together in the first 10 overs they had put 160 runs on the board. Opposition teams tried bowling wide outside off stump, tried short deliveries, tried mixing pace. Nothing worked consistently. In IPL 2025, Abhishek scored 141 off 55 balls in a single innings — the highest score by any Indian in IPL history. He made it batting opposite Head, in the partnership that had taught him there was no such thing as a ball that should not be hit.

The Kohli-ABD partnership scored more than 8,000 IPL runs together for RCB across their years at the franchise — a combined total that exceeds the entire career run tally of most individual IPL players.
